Keep your folded items at eye level. If you can't see something you won't use it and folded items are easy to lose in the stacks.

Have a shoe storage method in place so you aren't losing pairs, forgetting you have them or finding 1/2 and then needing to dig for the other 1/2.

Hang clothing rods 12 inches from the back of the closet so your clothes aren't bumping against the back wall.

Shelves should be at least 13 inches apart for the best ventilation and usable space. If you're planning to store lots of small items with very little height you can safety space the shelves according to typical item size. Just be sure you have enough room for the tallest items in the group.

Make the most of the bottom hanging area by installing a lower hanging rod. This way you can put shirts on top and skirts on the bottom (or neatly folded and hung dress pants on the bottom). It makes for a very neatly organized closet with everything in its place and no hunting for miscellaneous items.

Hang your shirts the same direction for easy access. When you're thumbing through items to find something to wear, it's easier if you can always see the front of the shirt.

Hang your shirts in some kind of order. Some people prefer rainbow color order, others prefer to group them according to function. For example dress clothes in one area, casual in another.
